East Hartford Holiday Fest'10 will be from Friday, December 3 through Monday, December 6 .
Holiday Fest'10 is presented by the East Hartford Beautification Commission and supported by many local civic, community and town organizations. The Fest is celebrating its 18th year.
In keeping with tradition, a community Tree Lighting carol sing and Santa arrival on the Town Green kicks off Holiday Fest. A drawing will be held just before this event at the Town Green to select the East Hartford child, between the ages of 5 to 8, who gets the honor of throwing the switch to light the town tree and Town Green. Santa will be on hand accompanied by his friends from the North Pole.
Master of ceremonies will be radio personality Mike Alan, the air traffic reporter for WTIC AM.
This year's Holiday Fest features close to three dozen different events for all ages during the four day festival. Held throughout town, the events provide an opportunity to collect donations of non-perishable food for the Food Panties operated by the East Hartford Interfaith Ministries. The purchase of the official, collectable Holiday Fest 2010 Button for only $2 goes to support the East Hartford Emergency Fuel Bank.
Admission to most events is free with the only request by the Holiday Fest Committee that everyone bring a non-perishable food item.
The Tree Lighting at the Town Green will kick off the Fest. Saturday will feature many events for children and adults such as a book signing, book sale, poinsettia sale and craft making at the Raymond Library as well as a Holiday Movie and gift making at the Community Center.
There will be an organ recital at St. John's. Also, a pancake breakfast, a Holiday Concert performed by Paul Bissacia, a spaghetti supper and a live nativity along with a Candlelight Carol Sing at the First Congregational Church.
Performers from the cast of the East Hartford Summer Youth Festival will organize a karaoke and pizza party at the EHCCC in the afternoon. A Christmas Fair with craft items and gifts is also planned at EHCCC.
There will be a Holiday Fair at All Saint's Church, 444 Hills Street, and a Cookie Walk at South Congregational Church at Forbes and Maple streets.
Parents can drop their children off at the YMCA so the parents can shop.
The evening will conclude with a Dance Festival featuring area dancers at the East Hartford Community Center.
Sunday's events include a Holiday Brunch at the Marco Polo, a visit from Santa at the EH Community Center and a Snowman Building Contest (weather-dependant) and horse drawn wagon ride outside the EHCCC. At the Raymond Library kids might enjoy taking part in the craft program or listening to a book reading and discussion.
Seniors are welcome to attend a Holiday Bingo Sunday afternoon at the Moose Family Center. The Merrimack Valley Bell Ringers, a community hand bell ensemble, will perform at the beautiful stained glass Faith Lutheran Church on Silver Lane, also Sunday afternoon.
Holidat Fest spills over into Monday as well with the lighting of the East Hartford Woman's Club Tree of Lights at the Raymond Library and stories and crafts with Mrs. Claus inside. Across from Town Hall nearby on Main Street visitors can hear the outstanding voices of the Pratt United Chorus who will present a special Holiday Music concert in the cafeteria of Riverside Health Care Center.
Please come and join us for one, or all of the many events of Holiday Fest. It is planned as a celebration to kick-off the holiday season in East Hartford.
Your non-perishable food item, or items, will be collected by volunteers for our neighbors who are in genuine need. The purchase of a Holiday Fest button, or donation, will help the town Social Services Department keep a family warm this winter.
Please spread your Holiday joy and the spirit of giving during this season of sharing and love. Brochures listing the events will be available at locations around town.
Note: Events listed as EHCCC, will be held at the East Hartford Community Cultural Center at 50 Chapman Place, East Hartford, CT 06108 and Events listed as Library, will be held at the Raymond Library 840 Main Street.
