East Hartford Wrestling placed second in the Bristol Central Invitational held at Bristol Central High School over the weekend.
The Saturday meet made history when Ledyard freshman Tatianna Irizarry became the first female wrestler to win a weight class since the tournament began back in 1981. Irizarry, who wrestled at 106 pounds, went 3-0 with one pin, and defeated Hall’s Michal Ortiz 7-4 in the final bout. East Hartford High wrestler Muhammad Kasliwala placed third.
The state’s No. 3 ranked team, New Milford, edged No. 5 East Hartford by two points, 197-195, to come away with the team title. East Hartford placed three wrestlers on top of the podium at the meet: Sophomores Jaeckez Mendez (138 pounds), Drayvn Roberts (170) and junior Sammy Montovani (195) won championship medals.
Avon finished third with 182 points.
