The Secretary of State’s office has issued a list Monday on the eve of Election Day Nov. 7 stating the total number of absentee ballots issued in every municipality in Connecticut.
East Hartford issued a total of 677 absentee ballots for this year’s election. Of that number, 587 went to registered Democrats, 27 to registered Republicans, 60 to unaffiliated voters and three to “other”. As of Monday, 429 absentee ballots have been returned; 369 from registered Dems, 16 from registered Republicans and 41 from the unaffiliated – plus all three “other” absentee ballots returned for a total of 63.36 percent – slightly below the statewide absentee ballot return rate of 70.76.
East Hartford ranks 23rd overall in the total number of absentee ballots issued. Greenwich is the state leader with 2,604 absentee ballots issued, with 1,875 returned for a rate of 72 percent. East Hartford’s rate of return of absentee ballots placed the town 143rd out of 170 municipalities that were listed by the Secretary of State’s office.
Oddly, Hartford reported issuing only one absentee ballot – to a Democratic voter and that ballot was recorded as being received. But that is likely due to Hartford’s registrars of voters not entering the absentee ballot numbers in time for the Secretary of State’s report Monday.
In Bridgeport which has been the focus of absentee ballot mishandling accusations by Democratic primary candidates, some 2,553 absentee ballots were issued – 2,351 to Registered Democrats. By Monday just 53.62 percent were recorded as being returned, or 1,369 ballots. A second primary election was ordered by a judge in that case which will take place after the general election.
Election results will be tallied Tuesday night after polls close at 8 p.m.
