The National Weather Service are forecasting a “significant snowstorm” to hit this part of the Connecticut River Valley beginning in early morning hours on Tuesday, Feb. 13.

Snow accumulations could be up to 12 inches. School districts in the area Monday decided to cancel school for Tuesday, but check with the school system’s parent alert system. Town of East Hartford programs, including regular trash and recycling pickup Tuesday, have also been postponed one day.

The town plans to activate its blue light street alert system. This lets the public know there is a police-issued ban on street parking. As of 8 p.m. Monday, a parking ban will remain in effect until further notice is provided by the town. Blinking blue lights on street light poles were set up in December 2022 is a reminder to move vehicles off the street to allow snow plows to operate more efficiently. Street parking in tight roadways and streets blocks the plows, particularly in Mayberry Village, the Brown Street and roads off Burnside and Main.

There are designated off-street parking areas, as follows: Alumni Park (1021 Main St), McAuliffe Park (30 Remington Road), Martin Park (307 Burnside Ave), Labor Field (Woodlawn Circle), Shea Park (66 Mercer Ave) and in the Elm St. Hockanum Linear Park lot. The parking areas off High Street and next to the former McCartin School are no longer designated as ‘blue light’ parking areas.

According to the town, there also might be “some disruption” to library services. East Hartford Senior Services at the Senior Center are canceled, but Tuesday evening programming will continue, unless stated otherwise on the town website and social media, the town press release stated.

If questions about the parking ban, call the East Hartford Police non-emergency number: 860-528-4401 or go to the town website, east hartfordCT.gov.
