Joseph ‘Joe’ Federico; Army veteran, coach

Joseph John Federico, 84, beloved husband of 62 years to Yvonne (Biagini) Federico, passed away on Tuesday, May 14, 2024.

He was born August 31, 1939 in Brooklyn, NY a son of the late Gaetano Thomas and Mary (LaRosa) Federico. Joseph proudly served his country in the U.S. Army in France where he met the love of his life. Upon returning he settled in East Hartford and raised a family.

Joseph worked at Electric Boat in Groton for 12 years, then for the Hartford Board of Education retiring in 2004, and also as a welding instructor at Hartford School of Welding. He was very active in coaching many youth sports teams in East Hartford as well as at Bulkeley High School in Hartford.

In addition to his wife Yvonne, he is survived by two sons: Ralph (Diane) Federico of East Hartford, Gerald (Kimberly) Federico of Glastonbury; two daughters: Karen Cummings of East Hartford, and Sheryl (Frank) Sitaro of Avon; and a brother, Robert Federico of California. He also leaves 11 grandchildren: Jessica and Katelin Cummings, Corrine Gonzales, Kristina Ennis-Beckford, Danielle Ewing, Joseph and Anthony Federico, Lauren Phelps, Lindsey and Julia Sitaro and Noah Federico; 9 great-grandchildren: Derek Acosta, Ashton, Mariana and Lena Gonzales, Ezra and Elena Ennis-Beckford, Frank, Eloise and Vincent Ewing; two nieces, Melissa and Jacqueline as well as his French family.

Relatives and friends may visit with the family Tuesday, May 21, 2024 from 8-10 a.m. at Newkirk & Whitney Funeral Home, 318 Burnside Ave., East Hartford. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11am at St. Paul Church, 2577 Main St., Glastonbury. Burial with Military Honors will follow at Silver Lane Cemetery.
