O’Connell School West’s THRIVE after school program hosted a “Books with a Buddy” event Thursday, November 21.
Organized and led by site coordinator Laurie Depratti, the event invited families to join in a variety of reading activities with their children. They created personalized books, decorated bookmarks, enjoyed refreshments and then took home books which were donated.
A highlight of the event was a special visit from Chompers, mascot of the Hartford Yard Goats.
Chompers had fun with the children and families, posed for pictures, danced with the kids, signed bookmarks, read with parents and even enjoyed snacks.
Laurie Depratti, OCW THRIVE site coordinator, stated she reached out to Chompers to join the event and interact with the kids and families. I wanted to bring an extra element of fun to the day, and having him there really enhanced the experience. His dancing and reading with the families added an exciting and engaging touch to the event.”
Khalid Wells, an instructional aide, stated: “I love seeing the kids actively participate in our events, and I enjoy being able to join in, too. It really highlights the sense of community we have at O’Connell.”
Chompers did not speak but gave the event two thumbs up!
Hayley Althoff, program manager, stated she was “incredibly proud of the work our program does. Hosting events that bring parents in to enjoy activities with their kids and see what we do on a daily basis is truly the highlight of my role. Watching the parents and children have a great time makes every part of my job so rewarding!”
