Food distributions continue in grip of a pandemic winter

Foodshare’s food distribution at Rentschler Field will start back up again on Tuesday, January 12.

Large event tents will be set up by a Windsor company in the parking lot behind the stadium. But the Foodshare distribution will be offered one day per week – Tuesday.

Foodshare has been distributing food at Rentschler Field in East Hartford since the start of the pandemic. This distribution site alone has served over 225,000 households; many new to food insecurity due to COVID-19 and has distributed over 6 million meals.

“We successfully served hundreds of thousands of people with the Rentschler Field distribution during the spring, summer and fall, but winter weather in New England is always an incredible challenge. Our team worked tirelessly throughout the holidays to find a way to keep this distribution site going through the winter, and we are happy to report our efforts were successful. Thanks to the continued support of Governor Lamont and the State of Connecticut, and thanks to a generous discount from our friends at Euphoria Event Solutions in Windsor, we will be able to continue our Rentschler Field distribution through the winter months,” said Jason Jakubowski, President and CEO of Foodshare.

Foodshare is encouraging people to connect with additional food resources in their community, including Foodshare’s network of over 200 partner pantries and meal programs in Greater Hartford. Our partner programs have food and resources available to help community members who are struggling with food insecurity. The Foodshare winter distribution off Silver Lane is only one day per week, Tuesdays, at Rentschler Field from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Only one allocation of food per car is allowed to ensure enough for everyone. In the event of severe winter storms check Foodshare’s website.

Within East Hartford, Foodshare will continue its ongoing weekly mobile food distribution points. On the second and fourth Monday of the month starting Jan. 11 the Foodshare truck arrives at Hockanum Park, 75 Hamilton Road, at 9 a.m. and later that day in Mayberry Village, 41 Home Terrace, at 12:30 p.m.; at Veterans Terrace, 102 Columbus St. on Monday Feb. 1, March 1, March 15 and March 29 at 1:30 p.m.; and at Summerfield Townhouses parking lot, 66 Plain Dr., Wednesdays at 1:15 p.m. January 20, February 3, 17 and March 3 and 17.

All food is now being prepackaged for pickup to reduce the possible spread of the COVID-19, and social distancing rules will apply while waiting in line.
